A Nest for Community
Play for All
The Northfield Community Education Center wanted an installation that would foster play and community for children. Jo-Lu collaborated with the Minnesota Children’s Museum to design and build this play space that also serves as an art object.
The Nest invites kids to spend time exploring a space that evokes both the safety of enclosure and the thrill of openness.
The curved shapes and concentric design echo natural organic patterns and bring a feel of the outdoors into the education center.

Building the Nest
All elements were fabricated and assembled by Jo-Lu. The curved shapes required exceptional attention to detail, and the structure had to be sturdy enough to stand up to the destructive force of enthusiastic kids.
