Mixing It Up

The project

A New Era for a Historic Space

The Vandalia Tower in St. Paul is on the National Register of Historic Places, so the King Coil Spirits distillery/restaurant build-out needed to respect the distinctive character of this industrial space with an ingenious, cost-effective approach. Enter Jo-Lu.

The entrepreneurs wanted a flexible space that could be easily reconfigured from an invitingly intimate lounge to a spacious event room. And they wanted installations and furniture that were distinctive and upscale but not clichéd or prohibitively expensive.

The Royal Reveal

A Room Fit for a King

Jo-Lu built curvy custom hardwood bars that perfectly suited the room’s character and size and helped set the retro-modern mood of the rooms.

Custom tables, host stations, and a custom sofa and triangular bench creatively utilized available space. Custom King Coil signage added brand presence, and steel screening created more intimate spaces within the lounge area and mezzanine.

Where needed, elements were epoxied, powder-coated or otherwise finished to hold up under daily restaurant use, and all millwork and finish carpentry were completed to the exacting standards of an upscale lounge.

Customers love the modern design and playful atmosphere of the space, especially all the unique nooks and crannies created by Jo-Lu.

One final detail

Pergola Perfection

As a focal point, Jo-Lu also designed and built a pergola using reclaimed timber beams from the old warehouse space using a combination of timber joinery and industrial bolting — a physical link between old and new.
